Silver Street, Inc. was incorporated in June 1979, started by Bruce and Craig Hardy. Apparantly it was named after the street where Bruce Hardy lived at the time. Bruce Hardy designed the Taxi Guitar in 1981 featuring a full scale, and shipped with a gig bag that allowed it to be transported in a NY City taxi. The Taxi's innovative design was the subject of a U.S. patent application filed in 1981, granted in 1983. Five prototypes were built by legendary luthier Richard Schneider, who was a Gibson guitar consultant at the time. Production of solid-body guitars started in 1983, and ended by 1986. This is an SCGC RS model which is Richard Hoovers interpretation of a vintage Gibson jumbo. For these slope shoulder jumbos SCGC uses perfectly quarter sawn, narrow, stiff, spruce brace stock, and then they double taper it. The first taper extends out beyond the bridge plate and then the second taper drops to the linings. This heavily knifed bracing style is something unique to Santa Cruz developed exclusively to create the woody, dry, explosive tone that the old Gibsons were prized for.
